It’s wild! Favorite clue/answer combination you’ve come up with?

Now it’s been more than 11 years since that first one and I’m making more than 30 puzzles a year. We submitted my first puzzle to Will Shortz and a few months later, it was featured as the kickoff to Brown Puzzle Week! I had so much fun doing it that I just didn’t stop. I’d never made a puzzle before but I wanted to participate, so Jonah Kagan, another Brown friend of mine, spent a day teaching me how to make them. During my sophomore year, we banded together to make Brown Puzzle Week at The New York Times, which ran from Sept. Several of them had ties to The New York Times in some way, too. I went to Brown University for undergrad and, for some reason, there happened to be a confluence of puzzle-minded young adults who went to Brown at the same time. And the worst part is I can barely even play the piano anymore, because my husband has been working from home since the pandemic began, and the piano is too loud to play while he’s on Zoom calls! What made you decide to try your hand at making a crossword puzzle? OK, the piano wasn’t the only reason we moved, but it was certainly the expediting factor.

I bought a Steinway baby grand piano from 1935 a few years back, which would have been an extravagance on its own, but we weren’t living in a place that fit a baby grand piano at the time, so we had to move, too.

In theory, I’m pro-mythical creatures in any capacity, but in practice, why spoil a beautiful garden with plastic? Unless you’ve got actual gnomes running around your garden, in which case cool. Sometimes I pretend to be asleep, but that doesn’t work because he’ll just keep trying until he succeeds. He’ll just come up to my face at 2 a.m., poke me with his paw and then wait a few seconds to see if I wake up to pet him. My dog has decided it’s cool to wake me up in the middle of the night to demand pets. I wish I had something interesting here, but I barely ever leave my house now, so the funniest things that happen to me all involve my dog. Funniest thing that has happened to you recently? Ever since I read “Matilda” as a kid, I have had dreams on a semi-frequent basis where I can make things fly in the air. I also love Trivial Pursuit, but no one ever wants to play with me so I mostly play by just quizzing myself on the trivia questions.
